Three men drowned in a creek near Ganesh Visarjan Ghat along the Mumbai-Nashik Highway at Retibunder in Thane West on Sunday afternoon.
The incident was reported at 3.08 pm. The three men had entered the creek to swim but drowned after misjudging the water depth.
Personnel from the Kalwa and Narpoli police stations, along with the fire brigade, Thane Disaster Management Cell and Thane Disaster Response Force (TDRF), rushed to the spot. The deployment included a fire vehicle, a rescue vehicle, a utility vehicle, two ambulances, two boats and a TDRF bus.
At 4.20 pm, TDRF personnel recovered the bodies of all three men from the water and handed them over to the Kalwa Police.
They were subsequently taken by ambulance to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa, where medical officers declared them dead.
The deceased have been identified as Alam Sayyed and Rizwan Sayyed, both aged 42, and 30-year-old Sahil Polandas. All three were residents of Thakurpada in Mumbra.
Further legal procedures and investigation are being carried out by the Kalwa Police.
Two teenagers drown in water tank at Aarey Milk Colony
Two teenagers drowned in a water tank measuring 80X80 feet at Gautam Nagar in Aarey Milk Colony, Goregaon East, last week. The incident came to light around 11 am after an unidentified person alerted the police control room that two boys had reportedly fallen into the water body.
The deceased have been identified as Nakeeb Usman Khan, 14, a Class 10 student, and college-going Zaid Patel, 15.
Both lived around Jhula Garden in Jogeshwari East. It was Khan’s wristwatch that helped the police identify him.
Police said the boys bunked school and college and travelled to Aarey with another teenage friend. They left their bags and clothes near the tank before entering.
According to the police, Khan was the first to drown, and Patel entered the tank in an attempt to save his friend, but both were eventually pulled underwater. Their third friend, who was standing outside, panicked and fled. He later informed a person on the road that two boys had drowned. This adult rushed to the spot but couldn’t see them so he alerted the police control room. The Aarey police have launched an investigation to establish how the teenagers entered the tank and the circumstances that led to their deaths. The role and whereabouts of their friend are also being investigated.
After learning about the incident, Aarey police alerted Marol Fire Brigade. The police found the boys’ bags and clothes near the tank, while fire brigade personnel launched a search operation using hooks and located both teenagers underwater. They were rushed by ambulance to Trauma Care Hospital in Jogeshwari, where doctors declared them dead.
